THE LATE afternoon crowd in the coffeehouse was almost more than Phillip could deal with. There was only one free table, and it was at the front of the place, sitting in the big bay windows that looked onto the street.

“Go grab the table, unless they are already here,” Daniel suggested. “I’ll get us something to drink. What would you like?”

Phillip scanned the gathered people, most of whom were bent over their books and computers. “I don’t see them. Hot tea. I’ll drink just about any kind, so surprise me.” He met Daniel’s gaze and drew strength from it. “I’ll be over there.” He gestured at the table, then hurried over before anyone else could grab it.

Angling so he could watch both the street and most of the coffee shop, Phillip forced himself to sit up straight and look as imposing as he could. A chill passed over him as Tommy and Ralph walked past the window before entering the shop. Seconds later Tommy’s gaze fell on him.

While Ralph went for their drinks, Tommy walked over to the table. “Phillip, you really don’t need to be here.”

“I just wanted to present my case in person. This thing is serious.” He kept his voice steady and drew on the energy his mountain lion offered up to push a strong urgency into his voice without sounding frightened.

Tommy nodded as he sat down next to Phillip. “We know it’s desperate. We’ve lost five pack members in two nights and have one missing.”

“They found another body this morning south of Red Peak. We haven’t been able to confirm it was a wolf or not. Bears had gotten to it and torn it up pretty good. Shannon’s hoping the coroner will have a name soon.”

“Who’s Shannon? Some girl you’re seeing? I knew you weren’t really gay.”

Phillip glared at Tommy as Daniel showed up at the table with their drinks. He set a pot of hot tea in front of Phillip. “Here you go, Phillip. You said surprise you. I hope this works, sweetie.”

He smiled warmly at Daniel. “I’m sure it will.” He could tell from Daniel’s look that he’d been close enough to hear Tommy’s last comment even over the low din in the coffeehouse. “Tommy, this is Daniel. We’re dating, and we’re dating Shannon, the man who’s the sheriff of Red Peak.”

Tommy swallowed hard, and an uneasy look crossed his face. “You’re dating a sheriff? The two of you? Does he know what you both are?”

Daniel patted Phillip’s hand as he poured him a cup of the steaming tea. “We’ve been completely honest with Shannon, haven’t we, Philly? It’s the only way to make relationships work.”

Even realizing the display was for Tommy’s sake, it was still the strangest Phillip had seen Daniel act, and it made him more than a little uncomfortable.

“That’s right,” Phillip agreed. “But we didn’t come here to talk about us. We came here because I still care about what happens to you. You and Ralph need to get out of town, and fast.
